terribly customer service 12/7/2008

\r this overpriced tiny little store is barely worth visiting. the entire staff is very unfriendly and rather pretentious. from the minute you step inside the door you are being watched and basically expected to spend money or leave. the woman, whom i presume to be the owner, is rude and unfriendly. ask her a question about what size needle to use or how many skeins to purchase and she will make you feel like an enormous inconvenience and just well, stupid. \r \r there are too many yarn stores to even bother stepping foot in this one that is unless you like grumpy, rude, judging people selling overpriced yarn....a limited selection at that. \r \r also know in advance that even if you wish to return anything you will only get store credit. even unopened boxes of needles or never touches skeins of yarn with all the tags still on them. they are not quite up to speed with what a return means. Pros: nothing. Cons: everything. more

Among the very best 2/17/2008

As a knitting maniac I've visited yarn stores, large and small, around the world. A Good Yarn is deceivingly stocked for a neighborhood store because it's helpful owner Beverly, manages to jam an amazing array of the latest and greatest yarns into her place of business. You can also find an excellent collection of knitting books, individual patterns, latest publications and the usual tools. A Good Yarn also holds some amazing classes where you can acquire skills you never knew you could accomplish. The staff is extra helpful but it is best to shop with either a pattern in hand or a solid idea of what you want to make. Rely on the knowledgable staff if you need yarn recommendations or have to make conversions. They are real pro's. The store has a beautiful array of specialty hand dyed yarns and knit-along yarns for creative types (like me). Knitter's will find it difficult to walk out without something...and, if you purchase your yarn at the store, staff is more than happy to help you with your project and there are always other customers around to offer opinions and help. With such extraordinary yarns on the market today, even the least accomplished knitter can produce a thing of beauty after shopping at A Good Yarn. Pros: amazing selection for a small store, stock changes regularly, helpful staff more

A Good Yarn 8/21/2007

There are too many yarn shops in the Boston area to give this store your business. Owner is unfriendly, dowright surly. Frequent staff turnover. Is this because the owner is so difficult to work for? If she treats her employees like her customers, the answer is yes. Nothing special at this store to warrant the unfriendly service and unneighborhoodly attitude. Take your business elsewhere. Pros: Sells yarn. Cons: Expensive, terrible attitude toward customers. more

knitters' paradise 5/6/2007

This is my favorite yarn shop in Boston! It's deceptively small- tucked into a building in Brookline Village near the T stop- but it's full of almost any yarn you could be looking for (brand, color, and gauge). They also sell books, buttons, patterns and needles, hand-dyed silk ribbon, etc. The sales staff are helpful, the prices are reasonable (not cheap, but everything is high quality) and they even accept returns. I think they offer knitting classes, but I've never been to one. Pros: amazing selection, cozy ambiance, nice staff Cons: none to speak of more
