Feel Good environment! I've haven't been to the dentist in the past 2 years and I am happy that I went to Avalon Dentistry! As i walked into the office I was kindly greeted and offered water or tea which I loved! I went into the room for an exam and i had a couple cavities. The total experience was very pleasant. I never thought their were such caring people out there especially in dentistry. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 12/31/2012

STAY AWAY!!!! I can't believe they are still in business as I went there a few years ago. Same issues as other posters, they said my husband and I needed $2-3000 worth of work or our teeth would fall out, YES they said that. Keep in mind, my husband has had only 2 cavities his whole life. They said he had a cracked tooth on the WRONG side, my husband pointed it out that it was actually the other side. To top it off, they have a line of credit that can be opened through wells fargo at the time, which would only take ""minutes."" \r They are CROOKS!!!!!! I was very angry, and compained to the receptionist that they are SO dishonese and she just said ""I understand."" I learned that some HMO businesses make up work to make money. Well it will catch up to them! more

RUN! They billed behind my back without my prior approval! 4/5/2012

WARNING! Avalon fraudently charged /billed me for services behind my back where I did not approve any of the charges sticking me with a huge bill of $1,440 they billed to my provider, that I didn't know about, until it arrived in the mail. I reported Avalon for Fraud to my provider and they are assisting me. I almost had a heart attack when I received a bill March 29, (for mostly dental cleaning!!!; submitted to my insurance that were never discussed with me or approved by me. I went there about a crown that had fallen out. \r \r The assistant who handles insurance did not tell me the dentist charges a $165.00 consultation fee ( I have never had a dentist charge me for a consultation and did not approve the consultation fee)!. When I went there I knew I had $1,500 help defray the cost of the fractured front tooth but Candace in the hidden billing I didn't know about appears their intention was to use up $1,440 of my benefits without my prior approval!! My insurance allows for a free dental cleaning annually. d Candace told me I would have to pay for the cleaning which was approximately $100.00 plus. I paid it but questioned it as I thought I was entitled to a free dental cleaning. Candace condescendingly told me, you wouldn't understand just have your insurance company call me. She was very rude. Avalon then billed Delta Dental for the shot injections $86.00 per quadrant 4 times (again not explaining and getting prior approval from my insurance or me. My husband's dentist charlges only $195.00 for deep cleaning for all quadrants, but Dr. Del Campo didn't advise that she charges per quadrant, $274.00; deliberately running up all my benefits for the year at $1,440! There was no estimate of services provided to me before services were rendered!! I called Delta Dental to report FRAUD! NO COmmunication, rude Candace, it is a scam here! I am contacting the Board of Dentistry & Better Business Bureau because I feel sorry for anyone going into this office and being hit with a bill after the fact they know nothing about.\r \r All other dentists over the years show you your options and educate you as to why and share the costs & you sign what those costs will be that you agree too. Noone in this office tells you and then you are stuck with a huge bill. I will be fighting them in everyway possible. I went on Yelp and found that Avalon has filtered 26 complaints. Candace, the insurance assistant double-billed me for a second deductible that I had paid in January. She told me that she had checked with my insurance provider that I hadn't paid my deductible. I later found out from my provider that Candace's statement was false, that I had indeed paid the deductible in January, but she billed me a second time. I was forced to go through unnecessary grief by her by having to contact my provider who provided me the ""PROOF"" I had paid my deductible. Instead of apologizing she rudely stated ""I will credit your AMEX"" and slammed down the phone. To date, and it has been WEEKS, I don't have my $50.00 credit! American Express is now helping me dispute the $50.00 and fighting her for me. The treatment here was horrific in billing behind my back; the rudeness, the dishonesty. I now can speculate as to the reason, Candace doesn't tell patients (at least in my case) what the estimated insurane costs will be, because patients would literally run from their chairs exiting their offices! They wait and bill you after the service is provided which is dishonest! I am going through to fight Avalon and go public even if I have to go to the Orange County Register to warn others if necessary! Avalon should not be allowed to defraud patients billing behind their backs. They should follow good business practices and discuss with patients all estimated costs and have the patients sign up front to spare them the stress and shock our family endured. I will fight this bill vehemently.Sincerely, Wanda more

Please Listen. STAY AWAY NO MATTER WHAT 11/16/2010

for the love of all that is holy, stay away from this horrible horrible, evil, awful place. I don't have enough room in this box to write everything that is wrong with this place. I signed up JUST to save someone from what I went through. Lies about how much things cost, falsifying records to get more money, onlays falling out, trying to get me to agree to more costs and services while my mouth is open and full of gauze and tools so I can't say no. they tried 3 different times in the same visit to get me to agree to x rays I did not need, each for a different and equally absurd reason. They KNOW they are ripping you off, the whole office has a quiet hushed feeling, and you hear whispers from the staff, talking about how big of a moron you are and how much money they may be able to extract out of you. If you want to experience avalon dentistry it is pretty easy to re enact these simple steps. 1. Have a room full of people point and laugh at you. 2. Hire a tall guy to grab you by the ankles, turn you upsided down and shake all of the money out of your pockets. 3. Have someone punch you in the face. At least then you will have your teeth entact afterwards. more

Inflated Prices for Unnecessary Procedures 10/5/2010

Avalon Dentistry has quite the racket going on. I switched to this dental office when my insurance changed and I had to leave my previous dentist, Portola Dental (whom I now truly appreciate). Unfortunately, I didn't investigate Avalon first. My story is remarkably similar to many other reviews I read for them. Having had only two or three cavities in my entire life, and no cavities when I was last checked six months ago, I was told by Avalon that I had SIX cavities, requiring five fillings and one onlay. This would cost $2000. They briefly explained this all to me, then asked me how I would like to pay for the procedure. I gradually realized that they intended to do the work then, immediately, and I was in shock. Were my teeth really this bad? But I was a fool, this was my new dentist, so I trusted them. They planned to do the left side of my mouth first (of course the side with the more expensive onlay), then would do the other side a week later. So I got half the work done, went home to recover, and started doing some research. The onlay they did was twice the price of what it had to be; I later found out from my insurance company that I had signed an ""Optional Treatment Form"" supposedly declining the cheaper procedure (one of the many forms they had thrown at me to sign without presenting any other options). Furthermore, for each filling they were charging me the standard insurance copay fee, plus $150 per tooth for ""desensitizing medicine."" I found out that they cannot legally charge me for the desensitizing med: it's supposed to be covered by the copay as part of the insurance plan, and my insurance company is in the process of receiving reimbursement from them for that. Even if they could have charged me for the desensitizing med, they were charging what I found to be almost three times as much as the average fee from other dentists in the area. Obviously I went to a new dentist after this experience. I told them about the cavities on the right side of my mouth that Avalon had intended to fill. They took a look themselves and determined that only one of the teeth needed any work at all, and that it would be a less-invasive procedure than a filling. I feel violated by Avalon; how much drilling did they already do to my teeth that was totally unnecessary? I also just learned that a friend had a similar experience at Avalon six years ago: several root canals (including one that was botched and needed redone), a deep cleaning, and crowns totally $4000. And as others mentioned on Yelp, the billing manager Candy seems to be the mastermind behind the deception. She's the one who presented the costs to me, got me to sign the paperwork, dismissed me when I tried to bring up concerns, and ultimately told me to bring my complaints to the insurance company when I called to explain why I was concerned about the procedures they had done. Bottom line: these guys charge inflated prices for unnecessary procedures, and cover it up by inciting fear (""you need to have this done now!"") and a lack of straightforward information. I don't understand how this is legal. more

Get a Second Opinion 5/7/2010

The Pros: Nice office, efficient staff and service, cable TV at every chair\r \r The Cons: Cost much more than other dentist offices and my impression is that they are trying to bleed the insurance companies dry. Recommended a LOT of dental work to me because they could get away with it with my insurance even though I didn't really need it. I got a second opinion and saved myself 90%! They charge more than double for simple fillings.\r \r You can't hear the Cable TV because of all the office noise.\r \r Recommendation: If you don't mind unnecessary dental work and higher insurance premiums this is the place to go. They were fine for my cleanings but I always felt they were trying to upsell me on something. If they recommend more work, ask for a copy of your x-rays, price shop and get a second opinion. \r \r Ask yourself, what kind of prices were they charging and services were they recommending that I could save 90%. Luxury comes at a cost. Pros: Luxury office Cons: Total Ripoff more

Unneeded work recommended for all 2/26/2010

The other reviews here repeat my own experience with Avalon Dentistry. My family of four visited this insurance-recommended dentist several years ago and left never to return after the first ""exam"" found root canals, cavities and periodontal disease in all of us. Recommended ""treatment"" for my family was thousands of dollars. I had just visited my regular family dentist 6 weeks prior for regular x-rays and checkup, and he had told me my teeth were all healthy and in perfect shape at that time. How then could I have developed massive cavities and periodontal disease ""in all four quadrants"" in just 6 weeks? It defied explanation. So I went to a third dentist -- with Avalon's x-rays -- immediately afterwards for another opinion. The third dentist stated that none of my family needed any work at all and that no problems were visible on any of our teeth on Avalon's x-rays. Stay far away from this dentist if you don't want your healthy teeth ruined by unneeded drillings and fillings plus painful unnecessary gum cleanings. Cons: massive fees cited for unneeded work for all in family more

Pirates at work 6/25/2009

Avalon Dentistry are nothing but pirates. If go in for anything, you will be told you need root canals, caps etc..If you don't have insurance nooo problem they have an easy payment plan.If you have insurance it won't cover the costs but nooo problem they an easy payment plan (Care Credit). It is highly unlikely you will get out of there without being told you need 1000's of dollars of work done. $3000 on low side and upwards of $10,000 normally. They will not give you a straight answer when you question them about what their charge is and what insurance covered and just try to get a printed statement showing what your insurance did pay.AVOID at all cost go anywhere else. These pirates are a complete ripoff and should be shut down for deceptive business practices. Cons: RIP OFFS more

Not so Nice! 6/21/2009

When I walked in the lobby was nice.. then I was greeted by some rude girl that just handed me a clipboard... when I noticed the bitter girl's Breasts were just hanging out ! Once taken back I waited 30 minutes until the Dr came in. In short the Dr. was really not too comforting at all. She basically made me feel like I had the WORST mouth she had ever seen. I only went in for a second opinion on a chipped tooth and by the time she was done with me she had a bill of 3,800 of procedures she wanted to do .. ranging from a root canal to a crown. Don't get me wrong I would understand if the crown was for the chipped tooth I went in there for but NO. I will stay with my old dentist. Avalon Dental is a RIP off you feel horrible leaving this place! Pros: The waiting room was the only nice thing about it! Cons: Many more

Nicest staff I have ever encountered!!!!!!!!!!! 5/7/2008

I have been a patient of Avalon Dentistry for a few years now and have been 100% satisfied with the professional staff and dentists. Their office is very clean and beutiful, which makes my visits very pleasant and comfortable. I think that their prices are comparable to other offices in the area. I have referred many friends and family, and they all feel the same way. Pros: Great service, financing, sweet and caring staff Cons: Far from my home, but worth the drive more

Not Recommended for the cost and service 4/17/2008

\r Cost - Very very high. No proper explanations for the $$ charged for the services are provided.\r Service - Poor dental work.\r \r I will not recommend this dentistry for anybody\r \r Cons: Quality of Service, Cost and No proper expanations for the $$ charged for service more

Avalon Dentistry Ripoff Charges 3 times anyone else Mission Viejo CA 11/1/2007

I wish I had read the reviews on this dental office before I went there for 7 fillings and 3 extractions. Luckily, I have only had 3 fillings so far. They charge $50 appointment cancellation if you cancel one day ahead. The office is decadent and grand, and after you hear their prices, you'll know why! \r They charge AT LEAST 3 TIMES as much as anywhere else I've gotten quotes from. For ex: One white filling costs $270 ($500 if you don't have an insurance they work with) . One extraction, regardless of difficulty, is $500! My copay for one filling is $95, even though my insurance co pay is20/80, because my insurance SUPPOSEDLY doesn't pay for the white filling. I've been to a few other dental offices and their extractions are only $150 - $200 and for the same white filling my copay is only $30. \r They have a payment plan via credit card company called Care Credit that I found 68 ""ripoff reports"" on from ripoffreport website. I don't care what they have to say about their prices. They are taking advantage of the ignorant public! DO NOT GO TO THIS OFFICE!\r P. S. They also have another office called Talega Dental Group in San Clemente, but I don't know exactly how closely they are related. Pros: Beautiful office, friendly ougoing staff, has a payment plan Cons: Over priced, Staff can be pushy/ salesy, unreasonable early cancellation charges, awful payment program more

Avoid Avalon Dental 8/15/2007

I agree with last review, they are a RIPP OFF.......My family and I went there and yes for my self and my husband it was $3000-. I found this to be extremly high considering I've have never needed so much dental work in my life. I went to a different dental office for a second opinion, I was right with my gut instinct. I left Ladera Ranch Dental paying $580-(without insurance) instead of paying $3000-(with insurance). Work that was said to be needed wasn't even there????? Like a cracked filling and a cavity????? They are very aggressive on getting you started with the dental work and if you question anything they have a quick response and even offer a payment plan???? I have friends who have gone Avalon and they too have had the same experience. I would not recommend anyone to this dental office. They should feel shame in what they do to people...\r Please do yourself a favor, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!!!!!!! more

Trust me, do NOT go to this dental office 5/9/2007

I've taken my family to several dentists over the years and this one is by far the worst. The office looks great and their prices are so hight that only the rich and famous could afford them. Their service and attitude are by far the worst I've ever experienced. We've knows others that have gone there and everyone one of them have left and gone elsewhere due to some problem with them. We have insurance and never got out of there for under $3000. Much of their work has to be redone later and they don't give a discount if they mess it up. They are a total rip off. Don't put yourself or your family through it. more
