Several months ago I had issues with my homes furnace. I called TMI and they came out and took a look. The service guy spent about ten minutes going through the unit and proceeded to take out his little magic wand/Co2 detector. He informed me that the flue readings were off the chart and it would kill me three times over. He also included horror stories of Co2 poisoning and what it does to a person. I mean graphic, awful stories! Was this necessary? The guy put the furnace back together and shut off the gas supply. No - he didn't "tag" it as unsafe, just shut it off. Then he proceeded to tell me I needed a new unit and could take advantage of the current rebates. I could get by with as little as $4000.00 (thats four thousand) and as much as $6000.00. I am a 47 year old man and not easily upset, but I freaked out. My wife freaked out. There was no way we could afford this. I went out later that day and bought two Co2 detectors from Menards.
