I think it's important to take kids on trips that are both fun and educational and this fits the bill. The lines are long to get into the free tour, but they don't require a reservation and there are gumball-like machines along the line that vend out jelly beans for a quarter or so. That keeps the kids busy. The tour itself is probably more interesting for parents than small children, but kids like to watch. It is just remarkable how much goes into the yummy creations and you receive a free sample of them (in a bag you would buy at the store) and can sample them at the tasting area. There is also a gift shop where you can buy "bellyflops" at a discount. There is also a cafe with pizza shaped like a jelly bean or you can take a lunch with you.
