Review content:
Picture this: your physically infirm, but completely mentally competent father sitting at a table with a construction paper Halloween bat, a tube of glue stick and some glitter sitting in front of him. Man, he looked miserable and pathetic. I had a pretty bad experience with the Glisan Care Center, where the first assumption is that the person is doddering. My father was supposed to be in for a few days to a week to build up strength after a 4 day hospital stay, before returning to his assisted living apartment. From the moment he got there, the attitude was that he was in for the duration. Instead of getting stronger, he got weaker because he spent most of every day in his bed or sitting in his chair attached by an alarm that went off when he stood up. I was there many times, and except for one time, when he was with a speech therapist, he was just sitting or dozing in bed. The social workers were sure that his assisted living place would not be able to handle his needs, even though they had no idea what adjunct services that place could provide, and didn't look into it for 2 weeks. They delayed all that time, and then said he had to be re-evaluated by his assisted living nurse - he had been evaluated in the hospital already - and that it would take until the end of the week. Which was coincidently how long Medicare would pay. (I also think they were trying to scare the assisted living facility away from taking him back.)
