Congratulations on getting out of here! 10/6/2011

Picture this: your physically infirm, but completely mentally competent father sitting at a table with a construction paper Halloween bat, a tube of glue stick and some glitter sitting in front of him. Man, he looked miserable and pathetic. I had a pretty bad experience with the Glisan Care Center, where the first assumption is that the person is doddering. My father was supposed to be in for a few days to a week to build up strength after a 4 day hospital stay, before returning to his assisted living apartment. From the moment he got there, the attitude was that he was in for the duration. Instead of getting stronger, he got weaker because he spent most of every day in his bed or sitting in his chair attached by an alarm that went off when he stood up. I was there many times, and except for one time, when he was with a speech therapist, he was just sitting or dozing in bed. The social workers were sure that his assisted living place would not be able to handle his needs, even though they had no idea what adjunct services that place could provide, and didn't look into it for 2 weeks. They delayed all that time, and then said he had to be re-evaluated by his assisted living nurse - he had been evaluated in the hospital already - and that it would take until the end of the week. Which was coincidently how long Medicare would pay. (I also think they were trying to scare the assisted living facility away from taking him back.) more

Just okay 5/13/2011

My Father had a stroke in December and picked Glisan Care of a large list since it was near the hospital and his Doctor. After meeting Angela, who is very nice and helpful, she gave us a tour of the facility. It's out dated a bit, which is to be expected I suppose. There was an odor in the air of urine and cleaners. I must say you need to tour in the evening and in the day- the facility is completely different at night. more

NO ODOR! 5/25/2008

Grandma had broken her hip, and we had to look for a rehab facility, quickly. (If you ask me, I feel pushed out by the hospital.) The hospital gave us several facilities to tour. I was impressed by the absence of urine odor in Glisan Care Center. The other 3 facilities had INSTANT urine smell upon walking in the door. (can i name them???) We choose Glisan for that reason...it was clean. Grandma got a nice two bedroom, next to a window. The nursing staff was somewhat slow at answering call lights, but not absent at answering call lights. The c.n.a's were just busy helping others. Like this one asian fella was walking and yelling in the halls, insisting on leaving. I saw two aides having to ""babysit"" him, as he would'nt listen to reason. Finally, his son came to calm him down. That asian fella was eventually transfered to ""a facility that could better accomodate his needs"", as I was told. Pros: established Cons: Not a huge parking lot, but have ample parking on the side streets. more

Friendly and caring staff 4/6/2008

I read the last review from over a year ago and I was shocked that this is the same place this lady was talking about. This nursing home is far from abusive. My mom has been there for the past 4 years and I visit her almost daily and have grown familiar with the staff there. I sleep well at night, knowing she is well cared for. My overall, general experience is positive. We've had some rough spots, but the staff has listened and resolved my concerns. I understand they have a tough job and appreciate what they do. The aids work so hard and are often under appreciated. It's not unusual for mom to loose things (she has dementia and will put her dentures in a napkin and has almost thrown them away several times). When these things happen, the care center has shown concern and have helped locate the missing items. On one occasion, they even paid to replace a pair of glasses that accidently got stepped on by another patient. They recently got a new director of nursing, who I have spoken to and whom I've been very impressed with. I have recommended Glisan Care Center to friends of mine who needed a temporary place for their dad. My understanding was they had a positive experience, and their dad will ask to stop by and visit his friends there on occasion. I think it's unfortunate that people tend to only focus on negative experiences in nursing facilities and totally ignore the daily heroic efforts that are made by people who take on the challenge of caring for our loved ones that we are unable to care for at home. If I didn't work, I still don't think I could take care of my mother at home. She requires so much care and attention. I am grateful for the staff at Glisan who will do that and who care so much for my mom. Pros: Friendly and caring staff, willing to communicate and resolve concerns Cons: There's no place like home more

Not recommended AT ALL 10/6/2007

Not impressed at all. Pros: If they hadnt lost his teeth & could use his right arm to eat with, they did have good food. Cons: Rude, dirty, very slow, lacking in person one on one respect or care. No water ever at meals. more

Over the top resident care 10/4/2007

I love Glisan Care Center. I get a good feeling just thinking about the place. The staff were so friendly and professional. The administrator brings her dog, a mixed lab who is very gentle and cute. She visits people and adds so much to the facility. Any concerns I had were not major, and were promptly addressed and attended to. I was so impressed with the knowledgable nurses and care managers. They were able to answer all of my medical questions and put my mind at ease. The rehabilitation team is beyond fabulous. They have a huge therapy area and are incredibly competent. I would highly recommend this facility to any of my friends and family. You will be well cared for!! Pros: Great customer service, professional, friendly, competent. Cons: The building is a little older and not in the ""best"" part of town. more
