Review content:
I recently visited this below-the-radar restaurant after a couple of dazzling reviews from acquaintances. My girlfriend and I arrived at 6:30 on a Thursday to an almost empty room. By itself, the space fit its Broadway location with a funky, cozy decor that slowly won me over. Our table was a little awkward as we played a game trying to figure out if we were the fish in the fishbowl or if the people walking in the door vis-a-vis a circular window to the side of table were. We also felt awkward waiting 20 minutes for our server. As my date was patiently waiting to hear the specials and solicit recommendations, I had plenty of time to pick a couple of bottles of wine that would compliment whichever path we chose. The prices were better than average, but the two lists had a big price gap. The dining menu was short, but diverse. We ordered two appetizers and two entrees. The fried oyster shooters were zesty, crunchy and delicious, but the steak tartar was not as impressive. It was presented in a bowl, obviously loaded into a ring mold and was a touch grey on the exterior due to oxidation, not appetizing. Entrees included an overly charred pork chop, with a perfect medium rare center paired fabulously with whipped yams, cider, bacon, and brussel sprouts. The filet with grainy mashed potatoes, uninspired asparagus and cherry tomatoes, although grilled perfectly, would have been a completely forgettable if not for the wonderfully blended gorganzola butter on top. We ordered a lemon white chocolate cheesecake for dessert and were very pleased with its nicely balanced flavors and firm texture. Service miscues included the initial wait, empty water glasses for most of our visit, and an offered refill on coffee that was never delivered.
