Review content:
My friends and I were walking down Duval Street and decided to stop in this past weekend while visiting Key West because the puppies were so cute. When I went in, I saw a written statement that was posted on the side of the bin where the puppies were kept. The statement said that the puppies were all from local breeders, pure bred, AKC registered, and usually sold to vacationers. It also said that the store will go to any length to help the puppies get through all travel requirements with airlines (or any other type of transportation) to get the dogs to your home. Finally, the sign ended with, ""THESE ARE NOT PUPPY MILL DOGS."" I was standing there with my friends and said to one that I didn't believe they were not puppy mill dogs. The owner overheard my comment and then proceeded to yell at me in the store about how I had no right to assume anything her store, dogs, etc. She asked me who I thought I was to say that they weren't puppy mill dogs when I didn't know her. She made a huge and uncomfortable scene with many other people in the store. I told her that I was a vegan and animal lover and know that many dogs sold in pet stores are from puppy mills even though almost all pet store owners say that they use local breeders. She then told me that if I didn't like her store, I should get out. The bottom line is this: whether a breeder is local or in Missouri, if a female dog is forced to constantly be pregnant in order to breed pure bred dogs that are they sold for a huge profit, then that is morally wrong and a puppy mill! Because of the owner's extremely inappropriate and unprofessional reaction, I feel even more strongly that she only has interest in earning money from exploiting dogs rather than truly caring about the welfare of the animal. Forcing a dog to breed litters of puppies again and again, whether you know the breeder personally or not, is inhumane. Even worse is encouraging visitors, who often times act impulsively while on vacation, to buy a dog for thousands of dollars when it's impossible to see what type of environment the puppy will live in. I would like to know how many of these impulsive purchases have resulted in the pet owners dropping the dog off at a shelter after realizing that owning a dog is a huge responsibility. So again, please do not support this store! Instead, please support local rescue organizations that truly care about the welfare of each dog. The website PetFinder is a wonderful resource to find the exact dog that you want (I rescued my dog by using PetFinder) without supporting the rude and greedy owner of this store.
