Yes, this is one of the more expensive sushi restaurants in Westchester, but it's also one of the best if not the best. It's simple and very traditional. There's none of that new-fusion stuff. But, if you prefer authentic sushi you would find in Japan, you'll be delighted.
It is interesting to read some of the negative reviews here. They demonstrate a clear mis-understanding of what a ""traditional"" sushi restaurant entails. Those who know better will be pleased with Azuma Sushi. The flavors and portions are authentic. A traditional sushi restaurant doesn't try to fill you up on rice and doesn't mask the freshness of their fish under the guise of ""fusion"" sushi.
You don't even need to use soy sauce to enjoy their sushi because it is so fresh and deftly prepared. In fact, they offer a variety of selections that are meant to be enjoyed without any soy sauce.
Azuma and Nanase in White Plains have the highest quality chefs in Westchester. I think that is what separates them from the rest of the non-Manhattan places. Fresh ingredients can only get you so far. You need a fantastic chef also. It's probably also why they get compared to the high end places in the city.
Azuma provides overall great value for the suburbs. The slight price difference from its neighbors buys you consistency, which is quite rare outside NYC.
