My fiance and I rented out an apartment in Manhattan with a friend. It was a four bed room apartment. When we went to look at them we were shown a model apartment and reassured that our apartment would have new carpet and fresh paint and would look quite similar to the one we had seen. So we went ahead and signed the papers. Our problems started IMMEDIATELY. I was not the one who went to see the apartment on the first walk through it was our roommate. That was my fault. When i arrived to move in though the ENTIRE apartment was covered in bugs. they were literally EVERYWHERE. My family and i were mortified. My fiance was away with military at the time so I was left to deal with it on my own. The carpet was about three years old and throughout the apartment there were cracks and holes. The property manager (a new girl) told me that since my room mate had signed off on the apartment that it was my responsibility to deal with the issues i'd relayed to her. So my Mom and I went out and bought plaster, got some paint from the maitence guy and touched the place up, we got a cleaner to come in and clean the apartment. it was dealt with. Not long after moving in (probably 3-4 weeks) our A.C. unit went out. It took management a week to get around to fixing it. Mind you this was in August that this occured. This was just the start of many things that we went back and forth on. The ceilling floors are so thin that everytime our upstairs neighbor moved it sent a thud through our apartment. The buildings are older, i understand, but in the winter the place was so poorly sealed that the cold air was seaping in through our light sockets and windows and doors. It cost us a fortune to keep the place decently heated. The laundry area was a joke. While the washers worked you had to pour in at least two- three dollars to dry a load. We often just waited until we were desperate for clothes and would either drive the three hours back to our parents or go to a reliable laundrymat in town. The inside doors didnt match the frame, which left areas where people could see in. These rooms included the bathrooms and bedrooms. the windows were off shape and incredibly hard to open. the quality of the apartment in no way shape or form matched the apartment we were originally shown. we were there for three summers (the last one we moved out during) and every summer our A.C. unit would repeatedly go out. sometimes multiple times and it always took the management a couple of days to fix it. Overall our experience with them was horrible. This list doesnt even BEGIN to cover what we went through with them. The managers were always changing too. We lived there for two years and had paid a large deposit. We did not get much back due to they had to replace the carpet due to pet odor. An odor that was there when we moved in (listed on our check in sheet) and worsened due to the fact our air conditioning was out again. We do have a cat and we probably did have a portion to do with the odor, not saying we did not. But they are charging us with 950 carpet replacement fee despite the fact that we had patched up walls, painted and improved other aspects to help us live in a better enviornment. Overall HATED this place and the people who ran it... they are only in it for the money, not to provide quality living places. especially for what we paid in rent.
