I am by no means a rock climbing expert. I have only been climbing a few times, and only indoors. So my opinion is from a beginner's point of view, but it should still be valid for other beginners reading this. Although I am athletic enough, not being a rock climber myself I found going to a rock gym somewhat intimidating. All my fears were immediately washed away as soon as we got there though. My girlfriend and I took beginner's lessons (with a group of other beginner's we did not know) with a couple of very good instructors. On Friday and Sunday nights they have College Night, where college students get the beginner class including all rentals for ten dollars. They have the same deal on Saturday for ladies and all day Monday for service industry workers. First, we had to fill out some forms and get our shoes and harnesses and all, and then we waited a bit while they assembled enough beginners for the class. The instructors were very friendly and learning the ropes (haha!) was easy. After the class ended my girlfriend and I continued to climb on our own for a good two hours. You need to go with a partner though (or you can have a group of three and take turns) because you need someone to belay for you. I couldn't believe how much fun it was, and it was much easier than I thought it would be. The only problem is the place is kind of out of the way, otherwise I would be there all the time. The RIRG has me hooked on climbing! more
