I am a fabric store nut. It used to be I went to them to buy fabric. I sewed all the time when my children were growing up, but now when I visit a fabric store I'm usually looking for something for the home.
Joann's Fabrics in Iowa City had a wide variety of fabrics for clothing as well as the home. You can also buy upholstery supplies there. They also have a large craft section and many silk flowers and vines. I like their notions area as well as the instructional books that they carry.
Usually I am looking for bargains and Joann's has very good seasonal buys. If you decorate for any of the holidays you will find many choices, but I recommend going after the holiday and getting things at the fantastic sale prices.
