Big Hearts Come In Small Packages--So Do Big Talents, Brains, And Smiles! 8/11/2006

Dr. Perez might not be the first person chosen to be a member of a basketball team--though he might surprise you there, too, so that you wish that you HAD chosen him. I actually know nothing about his talents when it comes to basketball (or even whether or not he fits into the golf-playing stereotype of his career choice). However, I know that he has a great team working for him, and both he and they score high points in my book. Several years ago, Uncle George had cataract surgery done by him with satisfying results, and I believe my dad did, too, though I can't remember for sure. He probably did, because it had been necessary for him to wear glasses to both read and drive for many years (in fact, he wore them most of the time), and, eventually, he didn't need to. He had been treating my mom for a long time and trying to get her to see better. She has dry macular degeneration and was starting to get discouraged, as she loves to read--obviously, because she has a writer for a daughter but for many other reasons, too, such as wanting to find out the latest news in the morning paper and read some of her favorite comics such as Garfield, Peanuts, Family Circus, and Crankshaft. Anyway, he even sent her to another specialist who might help her better, and either he or the other specialist recommended a place over in Hartford City where she might be helped. Nothing was really coming together, however. Then, he decided that it might be worth it to see if removing her cataracts might help her some. He warned her not to expect 20/20 vision after the surgery, but he thought that things might improve some. This has been a wonderful mother/daughter summer. Dr. Perez and his staff (office, nursing, and the lady who was in charge of helping her to select her frames on August 10) have been nothing short of helpful. They gave me very clear instructions on how to administer drops that began three days before each surgery and were given in a number of patterns in the month following each operation. At no time did we feel as if were being hurried during an appointment. When Dr. Perez and the rest of his staff were with us, it was as if we were the only people there--this in spite of the fact that his office suite is a very busy place. He is headquartered on the first floor of The Roby Building at St. John's Medical Center. Upon entering the suite, you first come into a very large yet very cozy waiting room that's beautifully-decorated and containing lots of magazines. The reception area is at the end southwest corner of the place, and you can see the place where you go to try on frames at the open, northwest corner. This is also where you walk through into the area where the different treatment offices are. The entire place has a feeling of warmth and roominess. There are lots of eye-themed "toys" around, too, and you can play with them just for asking. I haven't gone back-to-back with Dr. Perez yet, but I would say that he and I are about the same height (I'm just shy of being 5'4"). He has wavy, golden hair (kinda blondish-brown or brownish-blond) and wire-rimmed (I believe) glasses. What I notice most of all about his looks though is that friendly, boyish smile of his that makes his eyes sparkle. He has a very pleasant voice--and, even more than that, pleasant, supportive words come from his mouth. He told me one time that I was doing such a great job caring for my mom that he was going to make me an honorary RN. If he were a woman who lived in Michigan, his name would be Denise DiFalco! http://www.judysbook.com/members/dmdifalco/ Anyway, he was right about my mom's not ending up with 20/20 vision, but she's seeing so much better these days--and, as of this writing, she doesn't even have her new glasses yet! more
