Truly a coffee shop. 4/7/2006

Throughout time, man has always required a place to chill. The coffee shop has, for years, provided such an environment. Dunn Bros. Coffee offers a wide drink selection that resembles the ever present Starbucks with one obvious exception: they roast their beans fresh. Right there. The Folger's brewing, powdered milk user may not appreciate the difference a fresh cup makes. The high quality bean brews an exceptionally flavorful coffee, and the fresh roasting and grinding only further enhances the taste. The mouthwatering aroma hangs in the air, warm and inviting, and wafts from signature ceramic mugs that dot the tabletops. (Paper was SO last year.) Coffee not your thing? Fine. Dunn Bros. sells the magnificent Mighty Leaf tea, with at least six varieties on display at any time. Hot water refills are always free...and they provide the honey, sugar and milk. Real milk. And real spoons to stir and measure with. There is never any pressure to up size, or to move along. I've spent five hours planted firmly in a chair, reading with a mug of tea, breaking only to check my e-mail on one of three blazingly fast internet connections. Had I my own laptop, I would take advantage of the ample wall plugs and free WiFi connections. (Provided by the City of Addison.) And speaking of reading, Dunn Bros. offers a No Check-out Needed book basket. See a book you want? Pick it up, have a look. Take it home if you'd like, and keep it. And if you ever have a novel you never read, bring it up and drop it off. There's a good chance a fellow patron will like what they see. There's usually at least three books in the basket, not to mention the variety of magazines tossed around the area. (Everything from D! Magazine to Vegan.) Newspapers are available for purchase. Quick and The Dallas Observer are amply supplied and, of course, free. The staff is magnificent, and have mastered the art of chatting away while whipping up your drink of choice. They will stand by, patient and amused, as you take ten minutes choosing between French or Big City roast. Once they start to recognize you, they'll ask you name and memorize your preferences. They make an effort to get to know you, and seem thrilled when you do the same. You will notice a trend in customers. There are a great many regulars here. Almost everyone is friendly and willing to chat, though are just as content with their eyes on the computer screens and their noses in books. Patrons are usually good about hopping off the computers when you are obviously waiting. The free live music is a popular feature, so come early or be prepared to stand. This is not a place for just yuppies, hippies, scene kids or students. The customer base is a fantastic mix of everyone, plus the occasional dog and toddler. Their events schedule, menu and roasting process is available online. Visit http://www.dunnbros.com more
