World-class museum-ing! 4/1/2006

This fabulous, recently-moved and entirely new indoor-outdoor museum is the wealthiest in the world. Admission is free, you just pay parking. You park and take a tram up to the actual museum; the outside area lets light pour in, and from up on the hills you can see the skyscrapers of Los Angeles. The restaurants offer outside dining. The galleries are separated, and feature amazing examples of Western art including fine impressionist pieces, Roman artifacts, paintings from the Middle Ages, and furniture from the 18th century. Temporary exhibits in the past have featured exhibits such as Rembrandts and manuscript illuminations. What's possibly more amazing than the art itself is the architecture of the museum. It's slick and modern, and its indoor-outdoor approach allows breath-taking views of the surrounding areas. Worst thing was its location. Knowing the L.A. area, unless you're already really close-by, you're going to run into serious traffic driving through West L.A. to get there. Nevertheless, it is definitely worth the trip! more
