Right in the heart of downtown San Mateo there is a coffee shop that is nothing more than an alley. It's so narrow that only 2-3 tables can fit inside, and they depend on sidewalk space outside for another two tables. But the coffee is fresh roasted, and the shop family owned. They tend to brew on the dark side, so be warned. They also sell snacks, pastries, exotic teas, candy, and gift items in a well stacked cozy space.
