As a museum professional, I both love and hate this museum. As many other reviewers have mentioned, this giant of a museum has an amazing range of exhibits from a walk/ride-through coal mine to a German u-boat that you can actually tour. There's an omnimax theater and plenty of special exhibitions that are housed in the traveling galleries. What I dislike about this museum is how I have seen parents let their children run wild here. I know that kids learn by touching, and interactive exhibits are meant for lots of that, but I cannot tolerate watching kids slam their fists on computer screens, try to rip panels off the walls, and run around screaming. If your kids can't act civilized and respect the museum, take them to a playground. All in all, this is an amazing museum that is well worth the $12ish dollars of admission.
