PJ's is an interesting place. Lodged in the Hawthorne district among trendy shops, PJ's is a throwback to the days when lower Hawthorne was full of blue collar workers.
I first became aware of PJ's in the 80's when they hired boys leaving MacClaren School. The owner did a great job turning the boys into hard working young men. He wasn't afraid of their past, he was concerned about giving them a vocation for their future.
Time passed and I forgot about PJ's until I needed to buy my daughter a new bed. I discovered that not only is PJ's still there, it's still helping young men learn the craft of making mattresses and the ethics of disiplined and prideful work.
It's a great combination, one well worth sleeping on.
