Best Bargains from a Big Name Thrift Store 1/12/2006

I stopped in St. John's Salvation Army Thrift Store last week. The store has been there for what seems to be forever. Unlike other Salvation Army stores, it hasn't been upgraded to feel like a classy boutique and it doesn't have a store front that reflects artistic design. What it does have is character and deals. Books can be had for $2.50 per BAG...a real bargain for a bookaholic like myself. The books were not 1970's Harlequin's either...I found current, recently discarded novels in tip-top shape! Appliances and furniture were priced very reasonably. The biggest surprise of all though for this frumpy little store was the shoes. Truly the shoe and size selection was one that would make Imelda Marcos herself proud. Store clerks kept busy and offereing to help find sizes and items. Fellow customers seem to know who was a regular and who, like myself, was an outsider and embraced newcomers with the passion of a mother welcoming the college roommate to Thanksgiving dinner. Overall, this was a fruitful -and friendly!-shopping experience. more
