This beautiful retreat was one of the better results of the success of the Morton salt company. It is a several hundred acre area of native forest mixed with planted trees and shrubs and gardens.
There is a headquarters with a lunchroom and museum area.
Back in the '60s it was free and I used to come out here in my car after school to get lost on one of the wooded paths in a remote corner of the park.
Now it costs $6 a car at last visit. It is a lot more popular, but if you come during the week it is still possible to find lots of trails where you will have the woods to yourself, to share only with the forest creatures and the trees and wind.
