Low-key, enjoyable ride 9/25/2005

Every Saturday and Sunday afternoon, Knoxville’s riverfront echoes with the romantic sound of a steam locomotive as the Three Rivers Rambler rumbles along the southeastern edge of the city. The haunting melody of the train’s whistle evokes images of an era long past. It tells of a time when travel by rail was not only convenient, but chic as well. The Knoxville and Holston River Railroad, a short line of the Gulf and Ohio Railways, operates the Rambler. Owned by H.P. and Linda Claussen of Knoxville, they are aided in its running by their daughter, Karen, and many other dedicated volunteers. Passengers are welcome to bring their own snacks and drinks or they may purchase drinks onboard. Also available are Three River Rambler t-shirts and other train-themed gift items in the converted coach car, “Resourceful.” You will also find convenient restrooms here too. The Three Rivers Rambler train is located on Neyland Drive along the Tennessee River in downtown Knoxville. Excursions are Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Tickets go on sale 30 minutes before each departure. more
