We used to go to Proex for all of our family pictures. It is definitely better than going to a superstore. The prices are ok, the quality is pretty good. The photographers aren't necessarily the most experienced, but they do a decent job. If you buy a certain number of sheets, you get the negatives for free. This is a nice bonus if you need lots and lots of pictures! You can also usually find coupons around. For the last couple years, we have started going to a professional photographer, which I strongly prefer. But for most situations, proex is sufficient.
