Nice Mid-Grade Sushi 9/24/2005

Mio is definitely above conveyor-belt-type sushi establishments. There are a couple of different locations. There are 2 in Beaverton and at least 2 in the Portland area. If you've read my other sushi reviews, you know that when I go to a Japanese restaurants, I never order anything BUT sushi. The one exception to this at Mio is their tempura...mmm tempura. I love to get a bento box with tempura and sushi rolls. Some other nice sushi-related items I like to order are the sushi pizzas, the baked sushi salmon special, and the double crunch roll. The best rolls on the menu (in my humble opinion, and keeping in mind that I like it spicy) are the texas roll, the nicksan roll, dallas roll, and tempura roll. The miso soup is lovely here. I always order edamame too, but it's sometimes over-salted here. If you've never had edamame, I'm going to save you from an embarassing error that I made--the shells are not edible like peas. Just eat the soybeans inside. I do like to take them out with my teeth though, so you get a little of the saltiness along with it--kind of like eating sunflower seeds, right? If you just read the above paragraph and rolled your eyes...come on! Don't be a sushi snob! The staff at Mio are lovely. If you come there enough they'll be extra sweet and make more menu accommodations and give you the sweet tables. The only reason they don't get five stars is that the sushi can be totally on one day and not so on target the next. It's a little above what I'd call mid-grade sushi, and while the variety is acceptable, I love a wider spread. The price is pretty reasonable too, but if you go too crazy on individual sushi rolls it's easy to spend 40-50$. The ambiance is a little cold, definitely nothing special, but it's a nice little place to visit if you can't afford Syun and don't want to drive to Portland for Yuki (see my other reviews!) Enjoy! more
