Awesome Golf Challenge 10/27/2010

Good: This is one challenging golf course. The layout is amidst a forest of very large Oak and Pine trees, spread out along rolling hills that challenge golfers from every skill level. Lots of fairway bunkers. Trouble is real trouble, serious elevation changes. We played from the tips, and you can forget about reaching par 5's in two. I was impressed with every ammenity offered here, From the bag drop to the putting green. The par 3 course is real Suhh-weet. A very well kept tract all around.. Bad: I played every hole over a weekend. Three courses. The Crossings course is hard. Even as a scratch hcp. Many approaches are blind, and on hot days the greens were hard and would not hold an approach shot. Hyper-slick, well-undulated greens. The green fees were steep. Played on better courses for much less in Florida. I also detected a level of snooty-ness from the pro shop staff. College kids who knew nothing but prices. This course was designed with the ultra elite in mind.. Improvements: I can't say there is much room for improvement. I was impressed all around with the condition and playability of the course. They could probably offer some green fee reduction to make the course more affordable and increase the attraction. All the golfers I know from that area only play there once, maybe twice a year, which is a shame for such a test of one's golf game.. Other: I make it a point to play there every time I'm in Mobile. I was born there, my father worked in the clubhouse in the days when my race was not allowed to play. So, I make it my business to go there and represent my father proudly. T.M. Jones. more
