When you think food in New Jersey, you think pizza, Chinese food, and good diner food. The Tic Tock Diner in Clifton is generally regarded as the model for the state (a good diner - worth a visit). But with $3.00 gas, and Alexis only a 2 mile trip for me, I have to say that this institution holds its own against all comers. They have the usual diner fare -really good burgers, good fries, icy cold Cokes, and home made pies and cakes (I just had a cheese cake that was superb). They add in daily specials worth a taste like my dear departed mother-in-law's favorite - meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. I like their chicken souvlaki - very tender chicken and a tasty sauce. I also love their French Dip - good, fresh beef and a crusty roll. My wife loves their BLT on toast with a root beer. And their cole slaw is the tops in Morris County - maybe in New Jersey. We always order a side dish - maybe not the best diet food but it's so good, who cares. All good stuff.
But as good as lunch and dinner is, breakfast's where diners shine and Alexis has that covered too. They do all the usual takes on eggs and bacon with a bottom-less cuppa Joe. But I like their Belgian Waffles - fluffy inside, crispy outside - I wish they used real maple syrup (I'd pay more for it.) All in all, Alexis is worth a visit - they have ample parking and they are smoke free.
