My favorite trick to getting a good meal in a new city is to ask someone "if your best friend was in town for one night, where would you recommend he or she eat?" I was in the hotel gift shop and I asked a 20-something kid at the register when a 50-something customer answered with a question. "Are you on expense account?" I said yes and she said, "Then try V.Mertz in old market."
Old Market is a special area with a Greenwich Village feel and eclectic atmosphere. We found V.Mertz and discovered one of the most interesting restaurants in town. The atmosphere is upper crust NYC or Boston or Georgetown - definitely not a California flavor (which is OK by me). The service was professional - reaching toward but not achieving that aloof coolness of NYC's best. But the food is the star. On three visits, we had Angus beef, Fillet Mignon and once, my friend had fish. Fish in Omaha! And she pronounced it great.
A good, for the locale, wine list and wonderful deserts make this a memorable place and worth a visit.
If your business takes you to Omaha, find V.Mertz for a world class dining experience.
