Many perks and values to a community college 9/23/2005

I am a firm believer in the value of community college. Despite my having a fancy pants degree from a more prestigious and expensive college, the only way I could afford to finish my degree at such a school was having taken 2 years at a community college. Many of your core classes, especially if you don't really care about required classes that are not part of your major, are available cheaper and at more convenient times within the CT community college system. Many of the teachers at the local more expensive colleges also teach the same classes at the community college - so you are literally getting the same education. They take CLEP exams here for credit, which is great if you already have some field of knowledge (such as if you remember a course from high school). I like the small environment, it is a good step for a student not ready to move to a dorm or for an older student who wants to return to school. There is a day care within the school. I was looking for a certain class for my computer science major, and I thought Quinnipiac, a more expensive private school would have the updated computers and software, and it turns out the community college had better computer systems and the most current software. Four year schools will take anywhere between 60 -90 credits from a community colleges, it varies by school. more
