My Kind of Town 8/19/2005

I love Decatur. I'm originally from Seattle. When I tell people from there that I work in Atlanta, they make a point to console me, claiming that Atlanta is one giant highway connecting massive strip malls. Not an untrue characterization of this region, to be true. But Decatur couldn't be more different. Decatur caught onto the new urbanization movement when it was still the old urbanization. It kept it's beautiful old City Hall and town square and still retains its downtown churches. It feels like a walkable, livable small town in the midst of a big city. The current city government continues with this process. They're adding more condos to the downtown area which will help support more of the cute little boutiques and great restaurants here. And the Marta train stops at the square, so I can take the train to my work downtown and not even have to worry about Atlanta's highways. more
