Sokolowski's is a MUST! Whenever I come to Cleveland, the visit is not complete without a stop at the University Inn!
AMBIANCE
Very casual, old world atmosphere- like a Blast from the Past, you'll see the walls covered with vintage photos of Ball Teams, Politicians and Celebrities. Look for my favorite photo, Anthony Bourdain, the tell-it-like-it-is TV Foodie. The place looks and feels like it has been there forever- because it has...and that is a testament to the great authentic food!
THE FOOD
My favorite is the Stuffed Cabbage, with Perogies on the side. Dad loves the Goulash and Spaetzle. The also have Specials, Chops, Fish and More.
Don't miss the Salad Bar...it's included with your meal. Everything is delicious- but my favorite- the cucumber salad. It is out of this world!
Finish off your visit with one of the various desserts- the Coconut Cake and Chocolate Cake are family favorites to share. You will make your dessert selection at the beginning of the cafeteria-like tray line. You'll find generous portions of food, and a great salad bar, but don't pass up the cake- even if you have to take it home- you'll be glad you did!
LOCATION
Finish off your visit with a drive through the historic Tremont neighborhood. Look for the opulent Orthodox Church where DeNiro, Streep and Walken filmed "The Deer Hunter" in 1978. The wedding scenes and neighborhood scenes were shot here. Don't be surprised to see several "Leg Lamps" whimsically displayed in the front windows of this neighborhood, which is also near the filming site of "A Christmas Story". With a little online research, you can find Ralphies House!
About Me- I am a first generation American of European Descent, and grew up eating German foods along with the many other ethnic foods in Clevelands melting pot. I'm a native Clevelander, however, I have lived out of state due to military for over 20 years. Don't miss all that Cleveland has to offer. Those that truly know Cleveland understand this: To know it, is to love it!
Enjoy!
