The Oregon Zoo in Portland is a hike among the animals. The animals are grouped according to and spread apart on winding trails. Wear your walking shoes and bring or rent a stroller. Also avoid the Zoo on hot days as it is extra taxing on the body.
You have to pay $2 to park. Then you pay to get in. There are reduced fee days. See the website for more information:

In addition to the polar bears, penguins, beaver, elephants, giraffes. snakes, birds, bears, monkeys, chimps and other animals, the zoo has a train that goes through it. Unfortunately one can hardly see any animals from the train but it does make for a nice little rest break.
During the winter there are Christmas Lights in the evening. They also offer sleepovers for a fee through out the year.
