We've been to the Art Institute of Chicago twice. They have a fantastic collection which a broad range of work from the mid 1800's through the 1960's (our favorite time period). Rather than showing many pieces by few artists, their permanent collection is very broad - a small number of pieces by many artists. Don't miss the Dali's, Seurat's, Hoppers, Chairman Mao (Warhol), Rothkos, Picassos - you get the "picture." It's a wonderful way to spend a half a day.
