Convenient to a huge variety of family chain restaurants and fast food, so you can sit for dinner or grab a bite to go: Best ribs in San Diego directly across the street: Phil's BBQ--don't miss this one--skip the lines and call in your order of pork ribs to go to avoid the super-noisy restaurant. Feast in your room instead. Be sure to cross in the crosswalk...police are waiting to cite jay walkers. There's a grocery store and Target in the Home Depot parking lot just a few blocks east. A few more blocks and you'll see an all night 7-11, Chuckie Cheese Pizza, Chinese Panda, and the all-important In-n-Out Burger. The reason for all the food venues is the San Diego Sports Arena/entertainment center on the boulevard nearby. Bonus: one of the cheapest San Diego gasoline stations is accessible in the Sports arena parking lot as is the Chik-fil-a restaurant. This Wyndam is an older motel-style property, with drive up parking at the front doors of the rooms. Ask for an upstairs room to avoid noise. It consists of many buildings surrounding a chandeliered lobby building. Despite the grand lobby to welcome you, there are lots of crumbling areas in and around the hotel, but they try very hard to make the interior rooms glamorous with super comfy beds, loads of pillows and soft white sheets Wyndam style. Many of the rooms are two-room suites with two TV sets. Sadly no in-room internet, but there are two computers available 24/7 in the lovely lobby building and they'll cheerfully make free copies and fax for you. Security is dangerous due to the concert area, with lots of nearby strip clubs and bars and folks just passing through. Use a car if you need to get around. There are security guards walking the property, but that just proves you might need them. Cars are very safe in the parking lot but I recommend you lock them and don't leave anything in view. Inside the rooms, the rating should get 2.5 Stars...the property itself gets only 2-stars...elevators, walkways and parking lots are old and dirty. Location gets 4 stars for convenience, brownie points for some of the best family restaurants in San Diego within arm's reach. Lets face it: any hotel within a mile of an In-n-Out burger drive thru gets bonus points! Only three miles from Old Town San Diego and five miles from downtown's lovely Seaport village and the airport. Sea World is about 10 miles west. Zoo is 15 miles east.
