I bought a complete system last January. The condenser had not had final charge and ran through summer. In October I set up a service call to bring A/C Freon to final spec. After opening up electrical cover on condenser the Tech says I see you don't have a starter, I said yes I do, it came from the factory with a starter (capacitor for motor startup). He went on to say you really need this $350 starter and also you really need this special compressor oil for an additional $350 to which I said you are joking right?
Oh no he said you really need this, Alaskan sales should have told you about it when you purchased and installed system. So we agreed to $500 for both and he installed. I have since talked to Trane the manufacturer, they said you do not need these items on a new system maybe on a 10 year old system.
