UMass gives the impression of being full of unpleasant jocks, because that's mostly who you'll see around campus. But, as with any large town or small city, if you find the right corner you'll find good people, as I did in an esoteric computer science course. Also they have great events. I was personally mocked by Roger Moore here, when I sat in the front row with a girl clearly out of my league.
