Be Wary of Personal Training 5/16/2012

Went in to sign up to meet with a Personal Trainer weekly until I became comfortable with the gym equipment. Originally was told that the payments were able to be done per session, which was good because my schedule varies week to week. Had to come back to sign up and met with the owner and another employee to register. I was told the plan was month-to-month, not per session. I'd asked about cancellation policy because I only wanted to do a few sessions, and was told I could cancel using a certain form (shown to me) for $40 and 30 days notice. I have spoken to my PT on several occasions about the number of sessions I was planning and what I'd like to get out of them before I had a schedule change again for summer, and would need to cancel the sessions. I went to cancel my personal training sessions and was told that was for cancelling gym membership, but I would owe several hundred dollars to buy-out the contract. This was by the same man that told me it was only $40 to cancel. He said he gets these same complaints about the cancellation policy all the time. (Probably because he doesn't explain them correctly in the first place.) It's no use being up-front about your goals and timeline with these people. When signing the contract, ask them to print out a copy and read it for yourself before electronically signing it, because they leave out a lot of information. more
