Our family is so grateful for the care 2/28/2012

Our family is so grateful for the care that our Mother received at Miramont. She had Alzheimers, but while she was still functional she chose Miramont herself for their comfortable, refined living and progressive levels of care. The staff maintained her in a lovely apartment on the Assisted Living floor for as long as it was safe. She LOVED her apartment and the common areas areas especially the gym and the pool. When she declined too much for safe semi-independence, she moved to a private studio apartment in the Alzheimers specialty unit where she received the best of care until she left us. Her personal dignity was always respected at Miramont. We were able to keep taking her to the lovely restaurant type dining room upstairs for quite a while, even though she became less and less functional because the service in the dining room was so good. The tactfulness of the staff allowed her to continue to enjoy what, to her, was a special outing for a long time. They remembered what she liked so that she did not t have to read the menu to order, they knew her little personal difficulties so that silverware she could easily use was discreetly provided, and on a couple of occasions when she became disoriented enough that she panicked a little, her servers (Peter once, Renee the next) helpfully stepped in to support us so that no one else in the dining room ever realized that she had a bad moment. On the Alzheimers unit, the caregivers looked after her with competence, affection and tenderness until her last breath. They called for every little thing so that we knew what was going on and succeeded in keeping her clean and well groomed even though she became combative at times toward the end. At one point, she no longer really recognized us anymore, but her face lit up when certain of her caregivers showed up. She knew who was kind to her, and although she forgot our faces and their names, our family remembers: Christy, Delores, Mickey, and Jesse were among those who always made her smile and they especially stood out in her last days, but there were plenty of others who had also cared for her and it is a pity there is no room to mention each of them by name. Over the years, there were a few problems that inevitably came up (of course) but the management and nursing supervisors could ALWAYS be reached promptly and they always responded to our concerns, often taking care of whatever worried us right away. None of our concerns were ever simply put off or ignored. Although it is a very big facility and organizing all the details of care always seems more complicated than it should to those who have never done it, no one in our family ever got the proverbial run around. As a nurse myself, I can assure other families that this is HUGE compared to many facilities. Huge. In short, when you have to start looking for a little more help (or more than a little for some, like our Mother) for yourself or a loved one, do visit Miramont Pointe. They offer gracious living, excellent support services, and a loving and dedicated staff. more
