Misdiagnosed Infertility 2/25/2012

I moved to KC right after an appendectomy which left me with a reoccurring yeast infection. I got an appointment with Dr Eckert right away and she prescribed me diflucan. The issue came the following month when the yeast infection was still present and no Dr could meet with me. I had to meet with a nurse, Gleena Quist, for a vaginal swab. Somehow we got on the subject of conceiving and I told her that we were trying and my ovulation kit was positive that morning so she suggested that along with looking for yeast under the microscope she would also look for sperm motility. I agreed, not really thinking much about it. She said there was no yeast, it was all in my head (probably shouldn't tell patients you think they're crazy) and that all of the sperm was immobile. She then proceeded to give me infertility suggestions and referred my husband to their infertility Dr for a semen analysis. The semen analysis came back above avg except for morphology (shape of the sperm), it was at 1%. During this phone call from a nurse no reference ranges or 'normals' were given. We were devastated. We researched a bit and found normal morphology is 4-14% so it was a comparison against a 100% like we assumed. We truely felt like we were infertile and it was a horrible time for us. A few weeks went by and I found out I was PREGNANT! Yay! Unfortunately we weren't excited as we would've been since we had been told we were infertile and the pregnancy was hard to accept, odd I know, but it was a very emotional and confusing time. I called the office on the premise of malpractice and I was told Gleena Quist was 'spoken to' and also found out Dr Eckert was supposed to set up an appointment to discuss the semen analysis results, which never happened. The practice administrator didn't take this situation seriously enough and I hope my story will deter women from using this impersonal practice. more
