Diseased Animals 1/5/2012

We bought a crested gecko from them at a Reptile Expo a few months ago for our kids' first pet. What a bad decision that was! We should have bought one from the more expensive booth there that was more knowledgeable and clean. No wonder the price was so much lower! \r \r First of all, the man who rung us up put our lizard in a container that I could tell had been reused because it was cloudy and dirty looking, unlike the other businesses which used clear, brand-new containers for the lizards they were selling. Secondly, the man also said we could feed the lizard babyfood, which I later found out that is not what they are supposed to eat regularly. Thank goodness we had already gleaned from the knowledge of the other booths selling crested geckos and we knew they need a special Crested Gecko Diet powder that had all the nutrients they needed. \r \r But ultimately, that didn't really help much because our little guy wouldn't eat! We could hand feed him and get him to take in a few licks, and then he'd stop and act really weird, like something was wrong. A couple months later, he ended up dying. It was really really sad. Our kids all cried.. we tried so hard to keep him alive and did everything that you are supposed to do with temperature, food, humidity. \r \r After she/he died, we found out that geckos coming from a pet store, especially if the pet store doesn't practice good hygiene (handwashing between handling animals, etc.), can already have a disease by the time you by them. We read on the internet on so many sites, gathering up info, and we think that her symptoms showed she had this one type of amoeba parasite. We could have given her a special medicine for it, but it was too late by the time we found out. \r \r This was sooo sad and as the previous reviewer said, they should be shut down because they don't take care of the animals right. You are supposed to wash your hands and use clean containers; it's just common knowledge. But these guys had to put my kids and me through such a sad experience all because they aren't taking the time to do such things, or even learn enough about the animals they sell to give proper advice to customers. more
