Really Disappointed. 3 Bad Experiences. 9/6/2011

My wife and I were Grandview patients for 8 years. We like the doctors just fine. There are a few reasons why we won't be going back. About a year ago, my wife needed some blood drawn for some tests. After having one of the Grandview nurses drew her blood, my wife reported that her arm had never throbbed and ached before after having blood drawn like it she was experiencing. My wife has had a lot of blood tests over the years. Anyway, the throbbing pains and aching continued for two weeks, and a huge bruise covered the underside of her elbow and significantly continued down her forearm almost to her hand. My wife called Grandview, and they told her that it was normal, that she probably didn't apply adequate pressure to her elbow after the shot. A couple of days later, my wife showed her elbow to two of our friends who are nurses. They both said that it wasn't normal, and said that whoever drew the blood probably went right throw the vein and essentially caused internal bleeding. They said it wasn't serious, but to watch it. The bruise lasted for 3 weeks. After talking to our friends, my wife called Grandview and updated them on the situation. The receptionist admitted that they had had a problem, and that they were doing everything they could with training to ensure that something like this didn't happen again. About 9 months after the first incident, my wife had to have some more blood work done. A different nurse took her blood, but my wife had the same exact results. She called again to express her frustration. The nurse on the line told her the same exact thing that she heard before from Grandview: ""You probably didn't put enough pressure on it after having your blood drawn."" Frustrated, my wife let it go, but will never return. 4 months or so ago, I had to go into Grandview. My doctor was out of town, so I saw the PA. She did not know what exactly was wrong, but she suggested doing some tests, including blood work. I was hesitant because of my wife's experience, but wanted to find out as soon as possible what was wrong. After having my blood drawn, I could not move my arm without pain for a week. Actually, for 3 days I just couldn't move it. I couldn't play basketball because it ached, felt stiff, and bending it was torture. To set up the image of what followed, I need to explain that I do not bruise. In fact, I tell people that it's my superhuman power because I just don't bruise. Suffice it to say, I had similar bruising for 2 weeks like my wife did. I broke my tailbone once from falling off of 3-foot rock ledge landing square on my tailbone on another rock, and I can tell you I did not bruise as bad in that accident as I did after having my blood drawn at Grandview. Upset, I called Grandview to tell them. The nurse then turned the conversation and said that it was my fault, that I probably did not apply enough pressure, that I overused my arm. I explained the other 2 incidents with my wife, but she said that she hadn't heard of any other patients experiencing similar problems. Calling to complain was an absolute waste of time. After 3 bad experience with Grandview, we won't be returning. We also think that $230 an office visit is excessive, especially if it results in an incompetent nurse drawing your blood and making a mistake. The doctors are nice, but their staff needs to be better trained. 3 consecutive mistakes is unacceptable, and not being willing to partially refund a botched service is also unacceptable. Go elsewhere if you need blood-work done. more
