Expensive services, and cheap customer service skills 7/16/2011

Despite being the most expensive of all the salons I considered visiting in SLC, I decided to give Moore Hair Design a try hoping that I would at the very least receive high level customer service. No one was present at the reception desk as I walked in for my appointment. I would have patiently sat down, but I could not see the couches around the corner. About 3 minutes passed until someone asked with whom my appointment was and invited me to take a seat. Not a very warm and welcoming greeting experience. While waiting, I analyzed the salon floor plan, decoration... not a comfortable, relaxing nor elegant atmosphere. Also, the overall look of the hairstylists own hairs was not very exciting, nor elegant, nor inspiring. I had enough time to start regretting being there. My hairstylist came to greet me, confirmed my name and the service I was there for ( a service that should take at the VERY least 2 hours) but I was so nervous about the whole thing that I ended up telling her that I was there for a color consultation only. She said it was OK, and that if after the consultation I decided to get my color done, there would still be time for it. We talked, I told her what I needed, and she showed me confidence in getting the job done. I decided to get my root color done for my first visit and see how I would like her work before risking myself with the full weave. She went to mix the color, but shortly came back saying that she could do the color, but would not have time to dry and style my hair because she had another client in 50 minutes. I said it was not a problem, but asked if she could give me a discount. She said she would look into it. When the color was done and my hair was shampooed we went back to her station. I asked her if there would be, by any chance, someone else available to dry my hair so I could give her proper feedback on how I liked the color. She said she could find someone, but it would cost an additional $30. I decided to take care of my wet hair myself, asked her for a towel, and scrunched my curly hair. We walked to the reception desk for the payment. She gave me a $5 discount for not drying and styling my hair. $5!!! I felt terribly offended, but I did not complain because I hate to feel like I am begging for bargains. With everything, I still tipped her about 20%. Driving home, I felt very annoyed with a terrible stink that was surrounding me. My nose started running, and I realized that it was a mildewy, moldy smell that was on my hair and hands from their towel. I am allergic to mold, and a runny nose is an indicator that I have been exposed to mold spores. As soon as I got home, I showered and washed my hair again. My hair was still stinky, but I could not shampoo my fine hair for the 3rd time in less than 4 hours, specially after getting it colored. Today I am not impressed with the color of my roots, I could have accomplished better results doing it myself at home. I do not need to go far from my house, to an expensive place for my root color again, and I am not going to try to get my weave done there for sure. I have been coloring my hair for 12 years, and I know many high class hair salons outside Utah. Just so you all have an idea, last month I was in South America and I needed my root color done. The stylist doing my color was running short in time, so the salon owner ordered that 2 (two) hairstylists dried and styled my hair to cut time in half! The next client arrived, and the salon owner finished styling my hair himself. I really loved his care and commitment to get me pleased. (plus, besides all carbonated and sugary drink options they had freshly squeezed orange juice -not from a box) All this amazing customer service for 60% less than I was charged at Moore Hair Design. With my 12 year experience with hair salons, I find myself in position to say that Moore Hair Design is not worth the money they charge for their services. The owner definitely thinks too highly of her little salon. more
