Bad sales experience 6/24/2011

I'll preface this by saying that this happened a couple of years ago and I think they were called something different then. I don't know if the new name indicates a change in management; if so, perhaps things have changed around there. But their new ad campaign about how they give such fantastic sales service really rubs me the wrong way, because that sure wasn't my experience. My husband and I went there fresh from an interstate move. We'd been holding off on buying a new car until the move was complete because prices are better here than where we came from. We showed up in a battered, 10-year-old base model Tercel ---and with about $100,000 in our checking account from the recent sale of our previous home. We were ready to pay cash for a car that day if we found one to our liking. We felt dismissed from the moment we got out of that beat-up old car. Staff interest in us was minimal. A salesman answered our questions and even took us on a test drive, but always seemed disinterested and distracted; no doubt he was keeping a weather eye on the horizon, hoping for better prospects. He seemed vaguely surprised that we were mainly interested in Camrys which of course are a much higher-end car than Tercels (I don't even think they make Tercels anymore!) They had limited stock on hand and none of the Camrys we saw that day was exactly what we were looking for. We told the salesman what we were looking for, specifically, and gave him our contact information. He said he didn't think it would be too hard to find one that met our specifications, and have it delivered to the dealership. He promised to do some research and call us within about 5 days. After about two weeks, with no contact, we drove that beat-up old Tercel over to Parker Toyota in Coeur D'Alene. We were greeted warmly the second we stepped out of it, and felt that we were listened to and treated with respect. We had a really positive sales experience at Parker, plus they had a lot better selection in stock. We found just the car we wanted and wrote a $28,000 check for it on the spot. We've since taken it back to Parker for all our service needs and have found them to be stellar every time. I never want to get within a mile of Larry H. Miller again. They were snooty, elitist, condescending, and clearly made a snap judgment about us as potential customers, based upon the car we arrived in. more
