A hassle to work with! 2/22/2011

Equipment and facilities aside, we tried working with the Rite-Hite YMCA (Milwaukee) and the Wichita (KS) YMCA over a $216 billing discrepancy concerning a membership hold during an out-of-state move (which was as about as clear to us as how the YMCA network works from city to city). We were being double-charged by the Y for memberships in two different cities, which were three states apart. Here's my problem with it. They have NO computer system, NO communication, NO national network between branches to stop this? C'mon, get out of the dark ages! I don't care if two Y's are different ""affiliations"" - they do a pretty good job of streamlining their brand nation-wide to make it seem like they're ONE, so how about getting on the same page so people don't get screwed?!? I wouldn't mind even if charges would differ from branch to branch - it's better than DOUBLE CHARGING! After calling the Y's main office, they recommended calling Rite-Hite directly to straighten things out. However, they weren't much help either. Instead of compensating anything (or offering to compensate some months at our new YMCA) they promised to waive our enrollment fee and give us ONE free month (a fraction of the discrepancy) IF we came back! Less than helpful. Needless to say, we WILL be moving back to the area soon. We used to recommend the YMCA to friends, but this has left a sour taste in our mouths. It's hard to say we'll be back! Update: This afternoon I called Anytime Fitness out of curiosity. Their memberships are transferable nationwide. Their rates may go up or down from branch to branch, but you'll never be double charged unless you pay for tanning at a certain location(?). Sounds like THEY actually use the internet too! more
