Possibly the worst food I've experienced in 30 years 2/15/2011

My wife & I both had a day off from work & decided to spend that valuable time together dining on Thai food. We went to the web & looked for places that had numerous good reviews & were off the beaten track. Little Thailand seemed to fit the bill. We jumped in the car & headed out of town. As we pulled into the ""rustic"" dirt parking lot, we noticed that a couple letters were missing off the old rotting sign spelling something like ""_ittle _hailand"". We should have taken this as a warning. But being as hungry as we were, we headed in anyway. Ok..second warning sign. I've seen crack houses that looked cleaner. Again hunger won the argument & we sat down. The large family of local farmers next to us seemed to be enjoying their meal (I misread their silence as deep personal enjoyment of the food. I now believe they were in a state of shock realizing the size of their tab & the shameful lack of mere food mass) & I took that as a good sign. The short menu was a bit disconcerting, but occasionally a short menu can mean that the chef has nothing to prove & the 5 items are stunningly good. Holding this fantasy as a last hope, we ordered. The prices were as high as some of the upper-end places downtown & in no way fit the decor or condition of the rickety old shack. I could see that we were going to be at least $40 in to it before dessert. By now we were ravenous & the futile screams of my wallet trying to get the attention of my rational mind were being drowned out by the primitive need for sustenance. We started off with the stuffed chicken wings & to be honest they were surprisingly good. Ok, we thought, we can put our fears to rest. The Pad Thai arrived along with a green curry & some other dish that my mind has blocked from my memory for sanity's sake. The ridiculously tiny portions were over-salted to the max, over cooked & tasteless. There were 3 or 4 tiny dried-out shrimp in one dish that featured the item. The food reminded us of what a bored unskilled housewife might begrudgingly produce to merely earn her keep. No passion, no skill & no resemblance to any Thai food we've ever had in numerous cities around the world (including the food we had in Thailand itself). My wife was quite upset & gave the owner a piece of her mind (an extremely rare occurrence being Japanese & very polite) as I sadly paid the bill to the owner who obviously didn?t give a damn what we thought. We left bitterly disappointed, angry & still hungry. In short, you couldn't pay me to eat there again. If the rating system allowed for a 0.5, I would give it to Little Thailand just because we didn't get food-poisoning from the obvious lack of cleanliness I observed in the kitchen. When reading the glowing reviews this place has received, I realize that they must have been written by the locals who have never had any other international culinary experience other than an I-HOP Belgian waffle. I wouldn't recommend this dive to an enemy. more
