Where do I begin? With the fact that I've bought every birthday cake from this bakery for ten years, or the reason why I'll never set foot in there again (until they alienate their last client, sell the place, and it gets reborn)?
For a special holiday celebration we took out of town guests to Jean-Jacques. I bought $30 worth of pastries and coffee, but after one bite of mine, found it spoiled. I discreetly spit the foilness into my napkin and carried the plate back to the county for a fresh pastry. Had I received an apology and new pastry, I wouldn't have thought twice. Every chef/baker makes mistakes. What I got instead was resistance from the owner (""IWe baked them this morning. What you're tasting is alcohol.""). When I had my husband taste it (he's a chef) we got insulted (""You need to go to Europe."" ). I might have chalked it all up to a REALLY bad day and forgiven, if, when we were leaving, the owner hadn't FLIPPED MY HUSBAND OFF! Seriously? Is business so good you can do that to regular customers? Wow. Hat's off to them, right? It would have been funny if it didn't mean the end of my regular pastry-savoring dates with my six-year-old. Thank goodness Can Can is just a hop skip and a jump away.
