When I first moved to Portland 23 years ago (has it been that long already?) I remember seeing the Hotcake House' Open 24 Hours sign and thought I gotta try that place! I have to say in 23 years neither the place, nor the good food, has changed. Probably, in part, because of the simple menu. Though the prices have increased substantially, they're not over-priced. I usually get a strawberry pancake ($4.25) and either hash browns, a fried egg or bacon on the side. The portions are big. You will never leave hungry! As others have said, it's your classic dive where you can smell the grease as you enter and watch a cook prepare your food in the open kitchen. My only complaint would be the coffee. It's weak and, considering Portland's java jive, not very good. But overall if you want something more gritty than ihop or Denny's, where the food is simple and the portions huge you can't beat the Hotcake House.
