A nightmare! In my opinion, a classic rip-off attempt 11/19/2011

My wife took our car to Goodyear on Rt. 59 in Warrenville, Illinois, to have two tires repaired that they had improperly repaired previously. When she came back, she showed me a very long list they gave her saying that our car needed almost every type of service imaginable. I maintain my cars extremely well and some of the things they said needed replacement were virtually brand new or had just been done. I know something about cars, having worked on them my entire life. The intervals they claimed for the services were far shorter than Honda's recommendations. On top of all of this, they messed up the tire repair again today, using the wrong type of balancing weights after we told them what kind we wanted. I called Goodyear when my wife showed me the outrageous estimates and recommendations they gave her. The man I talked to was rude, in my opinion. I told him what the Honda service intervals were for a couple of the things they claimed we needed done and he insisted that Honda was wrong. Both my owner's manual and the factory service manual (I buy one for every car I own) recommended service intervals that were about twice (or more) the mileage that Goodyear said were required for some of the services they claimed were due. But the Goodyear man insisted that my owner's manual and factory service manuals were wrong! I guess Honda doesn't know about their own cars! The man claimed that he paid $200 per month for a service that listed the service intervals for cars and that it must be right because he paid that much. Strangely, all the services they claimed we needed were hand-written on the bill. One would think that they would be printed on the bill using the software that must have come with the $200 service they were paying for. They also said we needed new tires. However, we have Goodyear's top-end Fortera Triple Treads on the car and they only have about 35,000 miles on them. I believe they are rated for about 70,000 miles. If that's how Goodyear's top-of-the-line tires wear, I'm going back to Michelin or another tire. When my wife and another woman waited in the waiting room, they heard what sounded like a fight going on in the service bays. The other woman said she wanted to leave but she couldn't because her car was being serviced. Then the (presumably) owner and/or manager came into the waiting room and started screaming about his employees and shouted about how one of them had refused to repair a flat tire (mine, most likely). The manager was swearing and used the f-word among others. My wife said the other woman, who appeared to be straight-laced, was clearly very uncomfortable with all the screaming and swearing and wanted to leave. Then the manager started telling them his personal problems including something about some kind of recent surgery he had. My wife thought this was all very bizarre. It definitely wasn't professional. The next day I was doing routine maintenance on my cars and, as is my practice, I always check tire pressure when doing other services. It turns out that Goodyear over-filled the tire on my car by 8 pounds. It appears that they don't even know how to properly inflate tires and they are in the tire business! Then again, apparently a very angry employee was forced to repair my tires. Also, they slopped a bunch of black rubbery goop on the valve and part of the wheel of my other tire that they were repairing again. Any child knows that you can't fix a leak by smearing stuff on the outside of the tire or valve. They didn't even bother to wipe off the excess but that's no problem because it's just an old spare. Still, this reflects very poor worksmanship. In my opinion, this was a classic case of a car repair place hoping that the customer knew nothing about cars at all and would fall for and old scam. But that's just my opinion, of course. I will NEVER deal with Goodyear again! This is the type behavior gives car repair places bad reputations. more
