I rarely call a plumber. I have found over the years that most household plumbing emergencies can be fixed with the help of friends, home repair books, and a trip to the hardware store. Sometimes, though, the problem requires more skill (or better tools) than I can muster, and so I call in professional help. This was one of those instances: our upstairs tub started leaking from the trap, a problem we didn't know about until we noticed the spreading water stain in the downstairs ceiling. We cut out the ceiling, saw the extent of the trouble, researched our options, and decided to call a plumber.
