It was freezing but dry when we began a trip to Olympia last Thanksgiving in our 2010 Outback which we had purchased new and had routinely serviced at Wentworth Subaru in Portland. As we drove north it began to snow. Deicer had been applied to the freeway and soon the windshield was covered with spray. When I pressed the windshield washer nothing happened except that the windshield wipers smeared the window up so bad I had to pull over. I checked the windshield washer tank and the liquid was frozen solid. I immediately called Wentworth's Subaru's service center and was connected to Able. Able told me that it was common that windshield washer fluid freezes up and that the warmth of the motor should heat the tank up shortly. I asked why the service department hadn't used a deicer, since we last had it serviced in October. Able told me that it would be too expensive if they used deicer in all the cars that they service.
