Sushi is OK, but that doesn't make it Japanese 1/2/2011

An old Asian Studies hand recommended this place, so I had high expectations. The first few times I went I was not disappointed. The sushi was pretty good, and they even did reasonably well with the non-sushi Japanese food, which is rare in this area. I went back today after a 2-year hiatus and was disappointed. They did have good miso soup, which is no small feat. But I was horrified at their attempt at a donburi (rice bowl topped with a soupy egg mixture and meat such as chicken or fried pork). They served me a mound of rice on a plate topped with fried pork and a vegetable egg crepe. It was really dry, and surrounded by orange slices, and cucumber slices topped with maraschino cherries. The chefs don't know that the word ""donburi"" means ""bowl,"" and you really are supposed to douse the rice in a soupy mixture, hence the need for a bowl. My hopes for decent Japanese comfort food quashed. My companion had chicken tempura. Never once in my six years of living in Japan have I seen chicken tempura, but at least it was real chicken breast and not reclaimed chicken meat. They used panko instead of traditional batter, but it was passable tempura overall. The vast majority of readers will just want sushi, and for those purposes this place is fine. But if you actually want Japanese food, you need to go elsewhere. more
