One of the things I had my heart set on for my trip from NJ to FL was stopping for some SC BBQ. It wound up being the only thing I had on my list that I actually got to do, and I'm so glad I got to eat there.
When we pulled into the parking lot, my Mom & Dad looked at the unimpressive building with the peeling paint and asked what was up. I said ""we're having lunch here."" They both said they weren't that hungry.
We walked in and were greeted in a cheerful and friendly manner, as you would expect in South Carolina. When I said we were from NJ, they said they wouldn't hold it against us and we could stay.
We had their buffet with pulled pork bbq, bbq hash, turnips, dirty rice, cole slaw and hush puppies. Mom and Dad wound up eating two helpings of the pulled pork. The Pee Dee area of SC is known for vinegar-based bbq sauce. Mc Cabes was...AWESOME!
I was getting full, but I had to try the ribs and ordered a pound. Again...AWESOME!
When we arrived, we were the only people there, but during our lunch folks kept coming in one after another for take out. I probably should have taken some extra with me.
We left Mc Cabes and were driving all the way to Jacksonville where we were staying for the night. All the way there, I could smell the bbq on my fingers. It was one of the best 4 hour drives of my life!
Mc Cabes is only a few minutes from I-95 and absolutely worth the short detour. You'll never regret stopping for lunch or dinner, wherever you're from.
